An Introduction to Propensity Score Methods

Unlike randomized trials, observational studies often involve systematic differences in baseline characteristics between treatment groups, which can lead to confounding. Propensity scores help address this issue by estimating the probability of receiving a treatment based on observed patient characteristics, allowing us to create more comparable groups. We will discuss how to construct propensity scores, the key methods for using them (such as matching, stratification, and weighting), and their practical application in clinical research.
